My Ford's check engine light came on, any recommended garages?

So I was driving home yesterday and suddenly the check engine light pops up on my Ford Taurus, and honestly my heart sank because I've had this car for years without any major issues and I'm worried this might be the start of something expensive. The car still drives fine as far as I can tell, no weird noises, no loss of power, nothing obviously wrong, but the light staying on is obviously concerning and I don't want to just ignore it in case it's something serious. I don't have a code reader myself so I can't even check what the error is, and I'm a bit nervous about driving it too much in case I make things worse. I've had mixed experiences with garages in the past where they either take forever to diagnose simple problems or charge way more than they should, so I'm a bit cautious about where I take it. I'd really like to find a place that actually knows Fords properly rather than a general workshop that might not have the right diagnostic equipment. I was considering maybe I should Click here for Ford repair to get more information about a specialist I found, but I wanted to check here first and see if anyone has recommendations for a trustworthy garage that won't mess me around with diagnostics. Has anyone else had a check engine light on their Ford and it turned out to be something minor, or should I be preparing myself for a big bill?
